    About the School
     
    I.     Brief Introduction

     School of Foreign Languages, originally named Foreign Language Department, was founded in April, 2001. It consists of the First and the Second College English as well as the Japanese Teaching and Research Sections. In accordance with the requirements of course construction, Foreign Language Department was renamed School of Foreign Languages in March, 2005. The School consists of the following seven Teaching and Research Sections: English Major Teaching and Research Section, English Major Basic Course Teaching and Research Section, the First College English and the Second College English Teaching and Research Sections, English Audiovisual and Verbal Teaching and Research Section as well as Japanese Teaching and Research Section. The School has two majors, English and Japanese respectively; it is responsible for English and Japanese teaching as well as languages as a second course, offering foreign language optional courses, including Japanese, German and French. Furthermore, it also offers courses for non-English majors all over the university.

    II    Features and Requirements of the Major

    1.A Good Command of Foreign Languages

       During the first and the second years, education mainly attaches importance to the following basic skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing as well as translating and interpreting with the purpose of developing students’ comprehensive abilities. Thus, in the course of education, courses like Integrated English/ Japanese, Listening, Spoken English, Reading and Writing, Translating and Interpreting are very much strengthened. These courses all last for three semesters. In terms of the teachers of these courses, the School has some excellent teachers and teaching competition winners to teach integrated English; foreigners to teach Spoken English. The School has offered second classes aimed, to create a good foreign language-learning environment, organizing teaching practice activities regularly such as “ English Zone”, “ Foreign Language Arts Festival”, “ Foreign Language Karaoke Competition”, “ Big Hands with Small Hands” and so on; and to offer more opportunities for students to improve their English and the comprehensive abilities.

    2.Familiarity with Economy and Trade

        Based on the university’s International Economic and Foreign Trade Courses, School of Foreign Languages has offered the following courses: Business English, Courses related with international trade theory and practice. Meanwhile, the School encourages students to learn courses in other Schools. There are already 73 students having obtained their second degrees in the majors like Accounting, Finance, Law, and Computer. This is aimed to produce students with interdisciplinary knowledge and well-rounded abilities. 

    3.Emphasis on Humanism

       English/Japanese majors have quite a lot of foreign literature and culture courses like Selections of English and American Literature, General Survey of English and American (Japanese) Culture, History of British Literature, History of American Literature, Japanese Literature, Introduction to Western Culture and so on to improve students’ humanism.

       On the one hand, School of Foreign Languages makes full use of the careful and proficient teachers to help students establish a solid foundation in the first and second years. Meanwhile, the School employs credit system. This is a flexible way with modern management characteristics. So for these third year students and fourth year students, they have courses like Translation, British and American Literature, and Linguistics, as well as diverse optional courses. Furthermore, the School allows some top students to select other economic courses from the other schools or departments. All this makes students have higher linguistic ability and be familiar with economic affaires. This not only offers them opportunities to become qualified talents to meet the society’s demands, but also benefit their job-hunting as well as high-level development.

      III.    Aims of School of Foreign Languages

       Aims of talent cultivation are: to produce students with interdisciplinary knowledge and well-rounded abilities, solid foreign language fundamentals, wide range of knowledge, deep major understanding and abilities, and practical abilities.

       Aims of cultivation are: to emphasize bachelor education; and to actively create environment for postgraduate development.

       Aims of service are: to base itself on Shandong; to welcome the whole

       China; and to help Shandong economic development, offering particular service for some departments and companies touching upon foreign affairs, foreign economy, foreign trade as well as teaching and research.

    2.Goals of Development

       Managing to establish a blueprint based on English major and coordinate with Japanese, and German language development.

        Making great efforts to obtain the authorization of “ English Linguistics and Literature” and “Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics” during “the 11thh Five-year Plan” period.
